After a few years away from my cards (and apparently almost five years away from this forum), I want to get back into completing my collection. I also happen to have moved to a town with a comic / gaming store that has regular gaming events scheduled, which is nice. Initially, though, I'm hoping to work on my collection more than I am in playing. My focus is 3rd/Revised through the Mirage block, as those are the years that I played. If I was looking to pick up a booster box or a couple of packs from several sets, what sets might be the best to start working on a new group of cards to trade off and occasionally play with?

Buy singles that you need. Opening boosters to enhance your collection is not cost effective. However, if you like to draft, then it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a box and run some drafts with your buddies.__________________ ****Attention****DO NOT send cards to Jon Strickland, 1971 St.Laurent Blvd Apt 705, Ottawa Ontario, Canada K1G 3P8. If you insist on buying packs/boxes the latest set Return to Ravnica is your best route. It has a lot of trade fodder and could easily net you more if at the very least even money on opening packs.

Cost effective isn't really the aim (though close to breaking even would be nice) and buying singles is boring (though I've done it to finish off sets in the past). The downside is none of my friends play. I'm working up the courage to throw myself back into the gaming scene at the local store, but that means dealing with actual people.

If you want trade fodder, best bet is to always go with the most recent sets. Normally the easiest to trade off.

You needed to buy Return to Ravnica a couple of months ago when it launched and sold your Abrupt Decays and Vraska's for $20 and your Jace for $40 :P Now it's just an OK deal.
