Can someone explain why fetchlands are so fantastic? I'm sure I'm missing something drastic here. Thanks in advance.

They add more cards to your graveyard in the event your deck can utilize the graveyard.

For decks with multiple colors, they provide fixing, in that they make it so you can (usually) constantly use your splashed colors.

Using lots of fetchlands lowers your need for basic lands. So for every fetchland and basic (or shock) you're using while playing, you're effectively thinning your deck by two cards; which leads to drawing more cards that will put you ahead, or be able to answer a threat.

Thank you. Why are they so expensive, though. Just because they're standard legal? Or because they were expensive before the reprint?

They were expensive back when they were originally printed because the sets weren't opened that much; as the game was not as popular as it is today. The reason as to why they're so expensive, they're usable in all formats, and people that were previously unable to get their hands on older fetchlands now have the opportunity to do so now. There is a high demand for fetchlands because virtually every deck in Modern and Legacy use fetchlands. Lands will always be sought after because having a solid land base can be the grounds for a lot of decks.

Basically what enemy1g said. Though they are standard legal and delve probably benefits from fetches their true power is seen in modern, legacy, and vintage therefore increases a demand as well for duals and shock lands.
