war18 | Hello a shop I have worked for many times in the past locally has had these two pieces by Julie Baroh for quite a long time. They were wondering what they would sell for if they were sold on the open market (ebay, here, etc) or what you think they can get could ask for in trade if they wanted to get rid of them that way. Any info would be very appreciated thanks in advance. I have pics of both if anyone if wondering what they look like or if they or anyone they know might be interested. |
A1phaMale | Pictures would be a great start and if the pieces are framed nicely. Also, the size of the paintings will make a difference. There are lots of paintings of Legends cards on Ebay presently, but the vast majority have been sitting for quite some time. However, none of those pieces are done by Julie. |
Zachstax888 | Actually, both of those pieces are credited to Julie, unless it was an error on Wizards part. I might be interested and would love to see pictures. |
war18 | Here are pics of both, I will have a measurement of both and the paint used to paint them later today after I go to the shop here later today. http://s14.photobucket.com/user/war18/media/tetseuosize.jpg.html?sort=2&o=2 http://s14.photobucket.com/user/war18/media/Tetsuo.jpg.html http://s14.photobucket.com/user/war18/media/Firesprites.jpg.html?sort=2&o=1You can see the size pretty easily the with card for scale but if you guys want an exact measurement let me know.

war18 | Do you think because there are no Julie Baroh orignal art up for sale it increases or decreases their value Slinga. Is she a desirable artist? __________________ Always looking for Demonic Tutors: A/B/U, Summer Magic, Intl ED, Collectors ED, Aritst Proofs FBB are especially wanted!

A1phaMale | It is difficult to say. She has done only 24 pieces spanning from alpha to Ice Age. I do not know of any members on other forums who are actively looking for those pieces or other pieces by Julie (except the big three). Her most desirable ones are likely on lockdown with other collectors: mind twist, clone, and underworld dreams. quote: Originally posted by war18: Do you think because there are no Julie Baroh orignal art up for sale it increases or decreases their value Slinga. slurpee | probably around 1500 to 2k if you want a value of sorts. like most things it only takes two to make something valuable. |
dwiz | Gawd, such bad art in magic's early days. |

Isn't Tetsuo painted in this form purposely to be reminiscent of ancient Japanese art / imagery? |
mugu | i am interested in buying tetsuo. |

I think that this is the several thousand dollar question. I would have them reframed as well in some nice frames, and matted by a professional. If they are originals and not prints, they should have a tag on the back of the artist board/canvas that is from WOTC stating card name, artist, and year (mine do at least). You can also look at the texture of the paint. A screen print will have a fairly uniform surface, a painting will have brush strokes. |

NOt many original arts have tags on the back of the painting. I think only half of the 20+ i have do. Also i have purchased all but 2 from the artist. |
war18 | Here are pics of both the backs of the art. Tetsuo http://s14.photobucket.com/user/war18/media/Tetsuoback.jpg.htmlHas the original name as well as her signature and copyright 1994. Also on the front of the Tetsuo right under the paint on the right side it says the orignal name for the piece as well. http://s14.photobucket.com/user/war18/media/Firespritesback.jpg.html?sort=2&o=4 Fire Sprites has her signature as well as the copyright (sorry about fuzzy pic I can retake if it really matters) I can 100% confirm they are real. She lived in Bellingham, which is the town I live in and the store is located for many years. She did a signing at the store in 1997-1998 they didn't charge her at all to sell art and prints so at the end she gave each of these to the owner as a gift for his hospitality. He has had no contact with her for 8+ years and she moved away from town. But her father still lives in town and he could get in contact with him most likely if he had too. But he thinks the overwhelming evidence that these are real is good enough. The front of each print has blatant brush/watercolor strokes that go over the edge of the paper on each piece. I can get an exact method and kind of paint used most likely when my wife gets home and I drive her to the store (she went to art school for 3.5 years) The real question to me isn't if these are real it is how much demand for them there is. I heard about the store getting them when I was 12 years old and they have just sat safe in a drawer for a bunch of years. __________________ Always looking for Demonic Tutors: A/B/U, Summer Magic, Intl ED, Collectors ED, Aritst Proofs FBB are especially wanted!

mugu | War if you are in Washington so am I. I would love to know the price testuo |
givememana | I think the best way to determine the value is to put them up for bid on Ebay. I would be interested in these pieces. I own 10 Originals from the Legends set. And would be interested in picking these two up as well. These are probably 5"x7" size. I wouldn't bother framing them. If I bought them framed I would probably reframe them to my taste.

ermabwed | I've been in contact with her occasionally through Facebook. If a real question existed it should be fairly straightforward to authenticate them. __________________ Always buying misprints. While I agree with this for the most part, the framing of the Tetsuo Umezawa looks like it was done by a child, as well as the other. For the couple hundred it would cost, I think it would increase the sale value by $1k or more for both pieces by having them framed properly. Presentation is the key when selling art,and no matter if one prospective buyer would have it re-framed or not. If it looks nice from the start, more people will show interest in it, which means a higher sale value. This is my opinion, so take it as you may. |
paragondave | Authentication will be key in determining any value to these. I'd start there. |
Kallaya | I'd for sure auction these. Anyone pressuring you for a quick sale is afraid of an auction. I think Tetsuo could go for a couple K or more. Not sure on the other art but at least several hundred. |

It doesn't seem to me like there's a legitimate question about whether these are authentic, however it couldn't hurt to get authentication from Julie. Maybe I'm full of crap and someone counterfeited these as a way to get into the counterfeit Magic artwork world. Does anyone know for a fact that these pieces are in a private collection? Anyway, I suggest doing both of these things because neither could hurt |

One of the nice things about magic artwork is that the value is not high enough (save 20 or so, but even then most of these artworks are accounted for) for losers to counterfeit because it will require a great deal of time, money, and technology to do it. The path of least resistance is already being followed by such losers, since they are counterfeiting $100+ magic cards which can easily be inserted into the market. That's not to say you shouldn't evaluate the authenticity of magic artwork.

war18 | Im pretty positive they are real considering I was in the store when I was 12 saw her with my own eyes and saw her give the pieces to the owner..... That being said if someone needs more than that feel free to do the legwork and contact her and figure out if they are real. I suppose it will only increase the value. |
Thanos | Getting her to confirm they are legit is as simple as sending her a message on Facebook. I can't see any reason to believe these aren't real. I personally would just auction them in eBay unframed. Don't waste time and money getting them professionally framed, let the buyer worry about it. It not gonna make a difference in the art's value. |
